=== Hornets, Jazz clash in the Big Easy ===
(Sports Network) - The New Orleans Hornets snapped a seven-game slide on
Monday night and return home Wednesday to host the Utah Jazz at New Orleans
Arena.
Prior to Monday night, the Hornets last victory came Nov. 9 at home against
the Charlotte Bobcats. During that losing streak, the Hornets surrendered over
100 points in each contest and are winless for the season when the opposition
hits the century mark.
On Monday, the Hornets, who are still without No. 1 overall pick Anthony Davis
to an ankle injury, took an 11-point lead into the fourth quarter, but the
Clippers battled back and got within six with less than two minutes to play.
The Hornets defended the 3-point line and made four free throws to secure the
victory.
"We came out here tonight with a mission," said guard Greivis Vasquez. "We
didn't care who we were going to play, we just wanted to compete and show who
we are. We showed it tonight. Tonight was a good learning process for us all."
The Hornets shot 50.7 percent from the field on Monday and a staggering 60
percent from beyond the arc. Ryan Anderson went 5-for-9 from long distance,
Vasquez hit 5-for-8 and rookie Austin Rivers made three of his four attempts.
The Hornets are home for the next five, but it won't be easy in the Big Easy.
They host Utah, the Oklahoma City Thunder, Milwaukee Bucks, Los Angeles Lakers
and Memphis Grizzlies.
The Jazz head into Wednesday night's contest after a come-from-behind home
victory Monday night over the Denver Nuggets. Derrick Favors, who is back
coming off the bench after starting a few games, hit three big free throws
late to secure the 105-103 victory.
Favors contributed 19 off the bench, but the Jazz were led by 28 points from
Al Jefferson. He shot 10-for-15 from the floor and 8-for-10 from the foul
line.
Both point guard Mo Williams and reserve forward DeMarre Carroll are listed as
game-time decisions Wednesday. Williams injured his foot Friday against the
Sacramento Kings and has missed the last two games.
Carroll was key to the win on Monday. Denver didn't even get a shot up in its
final possession thanks in part to Carroll's collapsing defense.
"When I saw Ty drive, I've been playing against him all summer, I knew he was
going to try and make something happen and go to the goal," said Carroll. "I
just tried to come collapse. He saw me and time ran out."
Head coach Tyrone Corbin left Favors, Carroll and fellow reserve Gordon
Hayward in most of the fourth quarter Monday as he is still ironing out his
rotation.
The Hornets beat the Jazz in New Orleans on Nov. 2, 88-86, when Vasquez made a
floater with less than two seconds left. The Jazz, who are 2-7 on the road
this season and 6-0 at home, have lost three straight in the Big Easy.
