National League Game Summary - Arizona at New York
(Sunday, May 25th)
Final Score: Arizona 2, New York 1
Flushing, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - A.J. Pollock doubled and scored the game- winning run in the ninth as the Arizona Diamondbacks took the opener of a single-admission doubleheader from the New York Mets, 2-1, on Sunday at Citi Field.
Pollock opened the top of the ninth with a double to right off Jenrry Mejia (4-1). Ender Inciarte got a sacrifice bunt down to move Pollock to third. Two batters later following Martin Prado's strikeout and Gerardo Parra's intentional walk, Chris Owings grounded sharply to David Wright at third. Wright's throw went to second but snuck away from Daniel Murphy, allowing Pollock to scamper home.
Evan Marshall recorded the final two outs of the eighth inning to earn the win. Addison Reed toed the slab in the ninth and offered up a pair of singles to Juan Centeno and Wilmer Flores. With two away, Murphy flared one into short left field, but Inciarte chased it down and made a game-saving catch to end it and give Reed his 14th save of the season.
Chris Owings put Arizona on the board in the top of the first with a solo home run to left, but Wright's RBI single in the home half made it 1-1. Neither team pushed another run across until the ninth.
Arizona's defense turned five double-plays behind Bronson Arroyo, who yielded just a run on six hits over six strong frames. His counterpart, Rafael Montero, fanned a career-best 10 D-backs in his third career start. Montero also allowed a run on two hits and three walks over six innings.
Paul Goldschmidt had two hits for Arizona, which has taken the first two games of this three-game set. The Diamondbacks will send Zeke Spruill, a recent call up from Triple-A Reno, to the hill in the second game of the doubleheader to oppose Daisuke Matsuzaka.
Both teams loaded the bases in the eighth inning but came up empty.
With two outs and Jose Valverde on the hill for the Mets, Goldschmidt doubled and Miguel Montero was intentionally walked to set up a force. Valverde got behind and eventually walked Aaron Hill to load the bases, but Eric Chavez flied out to center.
In the home half, Murphy singled and Wright walked against Oliver Perez, who got Curtis Granderson on a liner before giving way to Marshall. Bobby Abreu pinch-hit and walked to put three on with one out for Lucas Duda. Duda, who left seven men stranded in Saturday's loss, grounded the first pitch he saw to Goldschmidt at first. The 2013 gold glove winner went home for the force out, and Montero's return throw back to first was in time to end the inning.
This game was a makeup for Friday's postponement ... Arizona hit 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position and left 10 on base, while New York finished 1- for-13 with RISP and 10 left ... Murphy, Wright and Centeno all had a pair of hits for New York ...The Mets have dropped eight of 10.
