National League Game Summary - Colorado at St. Louis
(Friday, May 10th)
Final Score: St. Louis 3, Colorado 0
St. Louis, MO (Sports Network) - Shelby Miller was nearly perfect.
The 22-year-old Cardinals phenom was unhittable after allowing a leadoff single to start the game, retiring the final 27 hitters he saw to pitch St. Louis to a 3-0 win over the Colorado Rockies.
The only baserunner Miller allowed was Eric Young, who reached on a line-drive base hit to right field. The heralded right-hander showed he was on top of his game by striking out the dangerous duo of Carlos Gonzalez and Troy Tulowitzki on six total pitches to strand Young on second base en route to his first career shutout.
Miller (5-2) struck out 13 and did not issue a walk in his eighth career start. With pinpoint control, he threw 84 of his 113 pitches for strikes and lowered his ERA to 1.58 on the season.
"It was definitely the best game I've thrown in my life," Miller admitted. "It was unbelievable. It was a great experience."
Carlos Beltran went 2-for-4 with a solo home run to back the effort as the Cardinals rolled to their eighth win in nine games.
Jon Garland (3-3) allowed three runs on seven hits and three walks over five innings as the Rockies dropped their third straight.
"It was (Miller's) night. What could you do," Garland asked.
The only run the Cardinals actually needed came in the second inning, as Jon Jay reached on a two-out single, advanced when David Freese worked a walk and scored on Pete Kozma's base hit past a diving Josh Rutledge at second.
Beltran hit a first-pitch changeup into the right-field seats in the third inning, and Jay tacked on a run with a sacrifice fly in the fifth.
