National League Game Summary - Arizona at Miami
(Saturday, August 16)
Final Score: Miami 2, Arizona 1
Miami, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Henderson Alvarez returned from a short stint on the disabled list to lead the Miami Marlins to a 2-1 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks in the third match of a four-game set on Saturday.
Alvarez (9-5), who was placed on the DL after experiencing inflammation in his right shoulder after a win over Washington on July 29, went seven innings and yielded one run on five hits with six strikeouts.
"This guy competes," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said of Alvarez. "The beauty with him and I hope, and I think this is true, he has realized how good he is."
Jeff Baker tripled and knocked in a run for Miami, which has won two of three over Arizona entering Sunday's finale.
Wade Miley (7-9) was the tough-luck loser after he surrendered two runs -- one earned -- while scattering four hits and striking out nine over seven innings.
"We didn't play really good today," D-backs manager Kirk Gibson said. "Wade pitched very good. He did a great job of keeping his composure."
Miami broke a 1-1 tie thanks to some sloppy play from Arizona in the seventh. Marcell Ozuna singled to begin the inning and moved to second when Mark Trumbo committed an error on a pickoff attempt. Adeiny Hechavarria grounded out to push Ozuna over to third, then Jeff Mathis reached on a fielder's choice out with Ozuna sliding home safely. Cliff Pennington had a chance at getting the runner at the plate, but his throw skipped in for an error as the Marlins took the lead.
Mike Dunn worked around a one-out single in the eighth and Steve Cishek set the visitors down in order in the ninth to nail down his 31st save of the season.
Arizona jumped all over Alvarez early and an umpire review played a key role in helping the Marlins keep it a one-run game after the first inning. Ender Inciarte and Pennington both singled, then David Peralta ripped a base hit to center, where Ozuna came up firing to easily get Inciarte at the plate. The umpires reviewed if Mathis gave a sliding lane for the runner and the ruling was upheld as the Marlins kept the visitors off the board for the time being. Pennington and Peralta worked a double steal before Trumbo lifted a sacrifice fly to center that plated Pennington for a 1-0 lead.
Giancarlo Stanton led off the fourth inning with an infield single to third and raced home two batters later on Baker's triple to right. Ozuna followed with a walk which put runners at the corners, but Hechavarria and Mathis both struck out to end the frame.

Miley entered the game with a 2-1 record and 0.89 ERA in three career meetings against Miami ... The D-backs outhit Miami, 6-5 ... Arizona committed five errors in the setback ...
