Kansas City, KS (Sports Network) - Sporting Kansas City may have squandered a two-goal lead in its last match at the Colorado Rapids, but head coach Peter Vermes still managed to put a positive spin on the result.

"It was a good result for us on the road," Vermes told MLSsoccer.com following the match. "We're getting out of here with one point. We wanted to get out of here with three, but this was still a good result for us."

One month ago, Vermes might not have been as positive with the club riding a seven-game winning streak that took Sporting to the top of the Eastern Conference.

But that is the state of affairs in Kansas City at the moment ahead of a home contest with the San Jose Earthquakes on Sunday.

Sporting's winning run was followed by three straight defeats and then the draw with the Rapids. But Vermes has to be hoping his team can return to its early-season form and get back on the winning track.

One positive to take from the 2-2 draw was the performance of striker Teal Bunbury, who was making his first start since the season opener and who tallied two goals in the first 14 minutes of the game.

San Jose recently snapped out of a funk of its own last time out, rallying from two goals down in the second half to claim a 3-2 win over the Los Angeles Galaxy.

The Earthquakes entered the match on a three-game winless streak, but moved to the top of the Western Conference with the win, which was secured with a stoppage-time goal from Alan Gordon.

Gordon came off the bench at halftime to spark the comeback, and with leading scorer Chris Wondolowski away on international duty, 'Quakes head coach Frank Yallop was pleased with how well the partnership of Gordon and striker Steven Lenhart performed.

"It was great," Yallop said of the Gordon-Lenhart pairing. "For us, it was a good look at two target forwards that are not just target forwards. They're mobile, they're quick, they're very clean on the ball and I think they played really well together."

Yallop will have to hope for more of the same on Sunday if his team wants to remain on top of the Western Conference.
