Kansas City, KS (Sports Network) - Sporting Kansas City continued its fine
start to the 2012 Major League Soccer season by cruising to a 3-0 victory over
the New England Revolution at Livestrong Sporting Park on Saturday.
Kansas City left it late in its opening win over D.C. United last time out,
but the club's second match of the season was anything but close as Peter
Vermes and his men dictated play against 10-man New England.
The Revs were reduced to 10 men after only 14 minutes when Stephen McCarthy
was issued a questionable red card, and Sporting took advantage as Graham
Zusi, Kei Kamara, and C.J. Sapong scored a goal apiece to maintain the club's
perfect start to the season.
Benny Feilhaber came within inches of giving New England an early lead, but
his shot in the fifth minute was deflected and taken just wide of the post.
Sporting came close minutes later and was only denied by the woodwork as Roger
Espinoza caught Matt Reis off his line, but his shot rattled the post.
The Revs were then dealt a major blow when McCarthy was harshly sent off in
the 15th minute. The New England defender was side by side with Sapong as he
tracked back to try and deny the Sporting striker a breakaway, but the referee
judged that he denied a clear scoring opportunity.
Sporting eventually took advantage of the extra man as Zusi stuffed home the
opening goal in the 28th minute. The K.C. midfielder latched on to square ball
from Kei Kamara and slipped a shot past Reis for his first goal of the season.
The home side doubled the lead in the 39th minute as Kamara made the most of a
rebound conceded by Reis, stuffing his effort into the back of the net from
Sapong sealed win in the second minute of the second half as he get on the end
of a centering pass from Seth Sinovic to turn in his second goal of the early
Sporting has yet to concede a goal this season, winning its first two matches
by a combined score of 4-0. It returns to action March 25 against FC Dallas at
Livestrong Sporting Park.
New England's season has started in the exact opposite manner of Sporting's
campaign as the Revs have not managed to score in their opening two fixtures.
Jay Heaps will have his work cut out for him before the club's next fixture
against the Portland Timbers on March 24.
