Union's Valdes loaned to Santa Fe
Chester, PA (Sports Network) - Philadelphia Union announced late on Tuesday the club has sent defender Carlos Valdes on season-long loan to Colombian side Independiente Santa Fe.
Per MLS club and league policy, terms of the move were not disclosed.
The move comes as the former Union captain sought a team closer to home in hopes of receiving a call to the Columbian national squad ahead of the final phase of CONMEBOL qualifying for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
"We will certainly miss Carlos for this season, but this is a unique situation," Philadelphia manager John Hackworth told the club's website. "We have done everything possible to make sure this move works out for both the player and our club. Our hope is that this allows Carlos the best chance of reaching his dream of playing in the 2014 World Cup."
Valdes, 27, joined Philadelphia on loan from Santa Fe on Jan. 20, 2011 before the Union secured his full rights in August of the same year.
This past season, the sturdy central defender played in 33 of the team's 34 matches, scoring two goals. He also was selected to his first MLS All-Star team.
