National League Game Summary - Miami at Atlanta
(Thursday, August 2nd)
Final Score: Atlanta 6, Miami 1
Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Chipper Jones went 2-for-4 with a two-run double and a run scored as the Atlanta Braves topped the Miami Marlins, 6-1, in the finale of a four-game series at Turner Field.
Jason Heyward ripped an RBI single among his three hits and scored twice, while Freddie Freeman also chipped in with a two-run double for the Braves, who have won eight of their last nine games.
Cristhian Martinez (5-2) earned the win with three innings of relief work behind starter Mike Minor, who tossed 3 2/3 scoreless frames before being forced to leave the game following a 42-minute rain delay.
"It's an inconvenience and that's about all it is," Braves infielder Dan Uggla said of the rain delay. "You can't do anything about it. You try and get your focus back when the game starts up and strap it on."
Nathan Eovaldi's second outing in a Marlins uniform since coming over in a trade from the Los Angeles Dodgers did not go as he would have liked. Eovaldi (2-7) allowed six runs on eight hits in just two innings.
"I just keep going out there," Eovaldi said. "I have to try and put this one behind me. Try and learn from what happened, learn from my mistakes."
Jose Reyes ripped a triple in the sixth inning to extend his career-best hitting streak to 20 games, and Carlos Lee collected the only RBI of the night with a sacrifice fly for the Marlins, who have dropped three of their last four.
The Braves struck first with three runs in their first at-bat. Reed Johnson started the rally with a one-out base hit and Heyward followed with a single before Jones brought both runners home with a double. Brian McCann walked two hitters later to put runners on the corners and Uggla singled home Jones for the 3-0 advantage.
Atlanta tacked on three more runs in the second. Michael Bourn singled to start the frame and Johnson was plunked before Heyward came through with an RBI single into left. Freeman then doubled in Johnson and Heyward, extending the lead to 6-0.
Reyes smoked a ball into the left-center field gap leading off the sixth and galloped for a triple before scoring on Lee's sac fly to cut the deficit to 6-1.
Chad Durbin and Cory Gearrin combined for 1 1/3 scoreless innings to get the game to Craig Kimbrel, who worked around a walk in the ninth to preserve the win.
Eovaldi earned his first Marlins win last Saturday with 5 1/3 innings of one- run ball in a 4-2 victory over the San Diego Padres. He fanned five batters and issued just two walks...Atlanta leads the series between the teams, 9-3...Marlins infielder Donnie Murphy missed the game due to flu-like symptoms...Braves relievers have allowed just 18 runs in last 87 1/3 innings (26 games)...Miami went 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position and stranded nine.
