Braves swing trade with Twins for Doumit
Atlanta, GA (SportsNetwork.com) - The Atlanta Braves acquired veteran catcher Ryan Doumit in a trade with Minnesota on Wednesday, with pitching prospect Sean Gilmartin going to the Twins in the two-player swap.
A nine-year veteran in the majors, Doumit is a .268 career hitter with 99 home runs and 396 RBI over 880 total games. The switch-hitter hit .247 with 14 homers and 55 RBI in 135 games for the Twins last season.
Doumit provides the Braves a third catcher to share time with Evan Gattis and Gerald Laird and a proven bat off the bench, as he possesses a .262 average as a pinch-hitter. The 32-year-old also offers versatility, having started 105 games in the outfield and 32 at first base during his previous stops with the Twins and Pittsburgh Pirates.
Gilmartin was the Braves' first-round selection in the 2011 First-Year Player Draft who entered last season ranked as the organization's No. 5 prospect by MLB.com. The left-hander had a disappointing 2013 campaign, however, going just 3-8 with a 5.74 ERA in 17 starts for Triple-A Gwinnett.
