Final Score: Minnesota 3, Cleveland 1
Minneapolis, MN (SportsNetwork.com) - Anthony Swarzak's first start since 2012 was just what the Twins needed. Swarzak (2-0) allowed just one run on two hits over five innings, and the Minnesota bullpen stymied the Cleveland bats in a 3-1 win Wednesday afternoon at Target Field. Swarzak, whose last start came in Oct. 2012, struck out three and walked one, while the bullpen allowed just three hits over the final four frames, helping the Twins win two of three from Cleveland. The right-hander was making a spot start in place of the injured Kyle Gibson, who is suffering from tightness in his lower back. Oswaldo Arcia added a solo homer and Danny Santana went 3-for-3 with two runs scored for Minnesota, which won for just the second time in six games since the All-Star break. Jose Ramirez had two of the five hits and drove in the lone run for the Indians, who lost for just the third time in eight contests. Cleveland starting pitcher Trevor Bauer (4-5) suffered the loss, yielding three runs on six hits, striking out seven and walking two, in six innings.
Final Score: Kansas City 2, Chicago 1
Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Norichika Aoki drove in the game-winning run in the top of the ninth and James Shields pitched seven strong innings, as the Kansas City Royals beat the Chicago White Sox, 2-1, in the rubber match of a three-game set. Mike Moustakas started the frame with a single to right and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Aoki singled on a soft line drive, but Sox center fielder Adam Eaton threw a strike from center as Moustakas rounded third. The ball beat Moustakas home, but he was able to knock it loose from catcher Tyler Flowers' glove as he slid into the plate. Greg Holland retired the side in order in the ninth to register his 26th save.
Final Score: NY Mets 3, Seattle 2
Seattle, WA (SportsNetwork.com) - Bartolo Colon tossed 7 1/3 solid innings and the New York Mets held off a late Seattle surge to defeat the Mariners, 3-2, and win the rubber match of a three-game set on Wednesday. Colon (9-8) retired the first 20 batters he faced until allowing a single with two outs in the seventh inning. The veteran right-hander allowed just two runs on three hits with five strikeouts and a walk. Daniel Murphy, David Wright and Juan Lagares each drove in a run for the Mets, who won their first ever series at Safeco Field. Robinson Cano supplied two hits and Brad Miller and Willie Bloomquist each had an RBI for Seattle, which has lost three of its last four. Starter Taijuan Walker (1-2) was tagged with the loss after giving up two runs on two hits and six walks across five-plus frames in his return to the Seattle rotation.
