Wildcat Red likely for King's Bishop Stakes
Hallandale Beach, FL (Sports Network) - Wildcat Red, third in the Haskell Invitational, has his sights set on the $500,000 King's Bishop Stakes on Aug. 23 at Saratoga.
"We have two options on August 23," trainer Jose Garoffalo said. "We can run in the (1 1/8-mile) Travers that day or we can cut back and go in the King's Bishop. Right now I'm leaning toward the King's Bishop. Right now it doesn't seem to be coming up as tough. I haven't decided 100 percent yet, but I'm probably looking at the King's Bishop. We've cut back before, like when we ran in the (seven furlong) Hutcheson."
The seven-furlong King's Bishop was a possible start for Haskell champ Bayern before the colt led the entire way in winning the 1 1/8-mile race at Monmouth Park by better than seven lengths.
"I was happy with the race. I thought (jockey Luis) Saez could have been a little more aggressive. I think he hesitated a little bit," Garoffalo said. "I think if he ran side-to-side (with Bayern) it might have been a different race, but he made the decision and I'm OK with that. The most important thing is he came back from the race very good. We're going to leave him at Monmouth a little longer - he loves Monmouth, the track and the weather - and then we'll send him to Saratoga."
Wildcat Red, owned by Honors Stable Corp., has won half of his 10 career starts for $850,850. This year he has wins in the Hutcheson, Fountain of Youth and Quality Road Stakes at Gulfstream Park, with a pair of seconds in the Gulfstream Park Derby and Florida Derby. His only out-of-the-money finish was 18th in the Kentucky Derby.
