Tamarando to start in Saturday's Spiral Stakes

Florence, KY (SportsNetwork.com) - Tamarando, winner of the El Camino Real Derby, will make his way to Turfway Park on Wednesday for Saturday's $550,000 Spiral Stakes.

"The horse will van to Santa Anita (Monday) and then fly to Cincinnati Wednesday," said Hall of Fame trainer Jerry Hollendorfer. "It's a very short van ride from the Cincinnati airport to Turfway."

Bred and owned by Larry and Marianne Williams, Tamarando had a final workout Sunday at Golden Gate Fields. With Hall of Fame jockey Russell Baze riding, the 3-year-old colt worked seven furlongs in 1:28 on the track's synthetic main track.

"He worked good," said the jockey. "He does what you ask him to do. 1:28 is a pretty good move on this track."

Tamarando is a veteran of 10 career starts with earnings of $625,120. In those 10 starts the colt has four wins, two seconds, three thirds and a fourth in his career debut.

His stakes resume features wins in the Del Mar Futurity and Real Quiet Stakes as a 2-year-old. He also came in third last year in the FrontRunner, Golden State Juvenile and CashCall Futurity. Tamarando began his 2014 campaign with a second in the California Cup Derby at Santa Anita as the 9-5 favorite.
