London Bridge closes to win Breeders' Cup Marathon
Arcadia, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - London Bridge, ridden by Mike Smith, came from well off the pace to win the $500,000 Breeders' Cup Marathon to begin Friday's opening day of the 30th World Championships at Santa Anita Park.
Trained by Jo Hughes, London Bridge came charging through the stretch in the 1 3/4-mile Marathon to catch the leaders and post a length victory over Blueskiesnrainbows. This was the winner's first race outside of Europe
The 3-year-old colt, owned by Waratah Thoroughbreds, covered the distance in 2:58.28 on a fast track.
The win gives Smith his 18th Breeders' Cup win, the most in the program's history.
London Bridge recorded his fourth win in nine career starts and adds $300,000 to his earnings. The colt has banked $332,969.
The Breeders' Cup began under sunny skies with a post-time temperature of 83.
