Nominees announced for Secretariat 'Vox Populi' Award

Louisville, KY (Sports Network) - Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winner I'll Have Another is among the nominees for the third annual Secretariat 'Vox Populi' Award.

The Secretariat 'Vox Populi,' or "Voice of the People," Award is given to a horse "whose popularity and racing excellence best resounded with the American public and gained recognition for thoroughbred racing."

Penny Chenery, who owned and raced 1973 Triple Crown winner and two-time Horse of the Year Secretariat, created the award two years ago.

Joining I'll Have Another as nominees are Frankel, Europe's undefeated Cartier Horse of the Year; Royal Delta, who captured a second consecutive Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic in November; Shanghai Bobby, the Breeders' Cup Juvenile champ who finished the year undefeated in five starts and Wise Dan, winner of the Breeders' Cup Mile. .

"This year's contest will be especially interesting because our committee and our fans will be choosing our winner from such a variety of contenders, each with a unique background and career path," Mrs. Chenery said. "Recognizing excellence in performance and individual contribution to racing ideally transcends our differences and unites us in the goal of furthering the sport."

The award winner will be determined through online voting as well as consensus from the 'Vox Populi' Committee and input from Mrs. Chenery. Voting online continues through Sunday, Dec. 23 and the award presentation to be held on Saturday, Dec. 29 at Santa Anita Park.

Zenyatta received the first Secretariat 'Vox Populi' Award in 2010 and last year's recipient was Rapid Redux, who retired with 22 consecutive wins.
