Yonkers, NY (Sports Network) - Leading three-year-old trotter Googoo Gaagaa heads a field of five for Saturday's 58th edition of the Yonkers Trot at Yonkers Raceway. The $455,594 race is the first event of the Trotting Triple Crown.
Trained by breeder-owner Richard Hans, Googoo Gaagaa will start from the inside post with Corey Callahan again driving. The colt has won 11 of 12 career starts for $345,945. This year Googoo Gaagaa has banked $307,433 with five wins in six starts. He set a world-record of 1:50 4/5 in capturing the Earl Beal Jr. Memorial at Pocono Downs two weeks ago.
"He's just a machine. He's a professional in every sense of the word," said Callahan following the record setting victory.
Archangel is expected to be the main competition for Googoo Gaagaa Saturday evening. Trained by Peter Arrigenna. the three-year-old will be driven by Jim Morrill Jr. from the outside post.
"(Archangel) has been everything we could have hoped for," Arrigenna said. "I love working with young trotters. I can teach them what to do and what not to do from Day One."
A winner of five of six starts this year Archangel has banked $189,112. His big win was in the $233,250 final of last month's Empire Breeders Classic at Vernon Downs.
"I know my horse can get around a small track, and he's earned the right to be there with the best," Arrigenna said about the Yonkers Trot. "There are only five in there, but when you go against Googoo Gaagaa and Stormin Normand, there's a lot of talent."
Here is the field for the Yonkers Trot in post position order: Googoo Gaagaa, Corey Callahan; Stormin Normand, Dave Palone; Market Share, Jeff Gregory; Muscolo, Ray Schnittker and Archangel, Jim Morrill Jr.
The Trotting Triple Crown will continue on Saturday, August 4 with the Hambletonian at The Meadowlands and the Kentucky Futurity at The Red Mile on October 7.
The last year that harness racing had a Trotting Triple Crown winner was in 2006 with Glidemaster.
