East Rutherford, NJ (Sports Network) - Broad Bahn, driven by George Brennan, had something left down the stretch to win Saturday's 86th edition of the $1.5 million Hambletonian at The Meadowlands. The victory in harness racing's premier event came one race after Brennan won the Hambletonian Oaks with 24-1 longshot Bold And Fresh.

Trained by Noel Daley, Broad Bahn was coming off a win in one of last week's elimination heats for the Hambletonian. The three-year-old colt, 4-1 in the morning-line, was sent off at 6-1 in the 10-horse field.

Manofmanymissions was the 8-5 post-time favorite and Chapter Seven was the 2-1 second choice among the sophomore trotters in the second leg of trotting's Triple Crown.

Getting away from the gate first in the mile trot was Luckycharm Hanover. However, Broad Bahn, coming out of the inside post, soon took the lead and led the field into the backstretch.

Setting the pace, Broad Bahn was followed by Whiskey Tax, Luckycharm Hanover and Manofmanymissions. The pacesetter took the field into the far turn where Manofmanymissions ranged up from the outside to challenge the leader.

Coming out of the final turn, Broad Bahn was along the rail with Manofmanymissions to his outside and Whiskey Tax still in the mix in third. Broad Bahn quickly pulled away from Manofmanymissions as Whiskey Tax moved into second. Manofmanymissions, driven by Andy Miller, broke stride at the top of the stretch.

Owned by Fam Alber Horse Racing, Broad Bahn opened up down the stretch and posted a three-length win over Whiskey Tax with Opening Night finishing third and Chapter Seven getting fourth.

"When you can do it on the front end you don't need any luck," Daley said.

Completing the order of finish was Pastor Stephen, Luckycharm Hanover, Whit, Magnum Kosmos, Manofmanymissions and Fawkes.

Broad Bahn trotted the mile in 1:53, the same time he posted in last week's elimination victory.

"He was really relaxed today," an enthusiastic Brennan said. "He was really, really good today. He was awesome today."

It was the first Hambletonian win for Brennan, who captured his second Hambletonian Oaks for three-year-old trotting fillies.

Broad Bahn adds $750,000 to his earnings, which now stand at more than $1.15 million. The colt has won eight of 17 career starts, including four of eight this year.

Broad Bahn returned $14.60, $7.00 and $5.60. Whiskey Tax paid $26.00 and $11.60, and Opening Night paid $6.40 to show.

The first leg of the Triple Crown, the Yonkers Trot, was won by Leader of the Gang, who was not entered in the Hambletonian.

The final leg is the Kentucky Futurity, which will be held in October at The Red Mile in Lexington. There have been nine Triple Crown winning trotters, the last being Glidemaster in 2006.
