Port rolls into quarters at Senior Women's Amateur

San Martin, CA (Sports Network) - Defending champion Ellen Port rolled to a pair of easy wins on Tuesday to advance to the quarterfinals at the USGA Senior Women's Amateur Championship.

Port handled Patty Moore, 4 & 3, in the second round, then rolled over Lisa McGill, 6 & 5, in the third round. McGill bested stroke-play medalist Akemi Nakata Khaiat, 1-up, in round two.

Port moves on to face Marilyn Hardy, who won her two matches 3 & 2 and 2-up at CordeValle Golf Club.

The second quarterfinal match will pit Liz Waynick against Mary Jane Hiestand. Waynick, the 2012 U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur runner-up, cruised to a 7 & 5 win over Becky Neal, then in the third round, Waynick fended off Tanna Richard, 2- up.

Hiestand needed 19 holes to beat 2011 winner Terri Frohnmayer, then held off Mary Ann Hayward, 1-up.

Mina Hardin, the 2010 champion, will face Caryn Wilson in the third quarterfinal match. Hardin knocked off Cindy Morris, 2 & 1, before cruising to a 7 & 5 win over Karen Ferree in round three.

Wilson ousted Mary Budke, 4 & 3 to win round two, then won the final three holes to rally for a 2-up win over Pamela Kuong in round three.

The last quarterfinal match will pit 2004 U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur champion Corey Weworski against Susan Cohn. Weworski earned a 3 & 2 victory over Helene Chartrand in round two, before ousting 2009 U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur champ Martha Leach.

Cohn edged Marianne Towersey, 2 & 1, in the second round, before holding off Sherry Herman, 1-up in round three.
