Nicklaus, Watson cruise to Skins Game victory
Lahaina, HI (Sports Network) - Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson picked up three
skins on Sunday to cruise to a big win at the Champions Skins Game.
Nicklaus and Watson finished with 10 skins and $350,000. They earned $130,000
on Sunday with their three skins.
Ben Crenshaw and Fuzzy Zoeller, the 2009 champions, took second place with
five skins and $230,000. They earned all five skins on Sunday.
Fred Couples and Nick Price birdied the playoff hole to win two of their three
skins. They collected $190,000 with those three skins. Gary Player and Loren
Roberts were shut out.
Watson set up Nicklaus on the 10th. Nicklaus converted a birdie try as they
earned two skins there, as the ninth was carried over from Saturday's opening
nine. With that win, they had won nine of the first 10 skins to grab a big
cushion.
Crenshaw and Zoeller birdied the 12th for two skins and also birdied the 13th
to quickly earn three skins. The 15th was worth two more skins and the 2009
winners made another birdie to move their total to five skins.
"We played more solid golf today. We won it last year and got back in it this
year, which is wonderful, but we just didn't play well [Saturday]," said
Crenshaw. "We had some more looks today."
Watson wrapped up the win for his tandem with a long birdie putt on the 16th.
"The 10th hole there were three good shots. Jack made a good putt there," said
Watson. "At 16, I kind of had a good feeling about that putt there. It was
about 30 feet and it was a putt I felt like I could make and I did."
Price and Couples halved the final two holes. The 18th they halved with
Roberts and Player, which was just the third hole those two were a factor in.
In fact, they halved one, nine and 18, but didn't earn a single skin.
Price and Couples then birdied the playoff hole to earn their final two skins.
