NOTES
In the final tuneup before the U.S. Open, the PGA Tour heads to Memphis for the St. Jude Classic. Most of the world`s top players are taking the week off in preparation for the second major of the year, but defending champion and world No. 2 Lee Westwood will be on hand to defend his title. Last year, Westwood rolled in a five-foot birdie putt on the fourth playoff hole to defeat Robert Garrigus and Robert Karlsson and capture his second PGA Tour title and first since 1998. Garrigus had a three-shot lead heading into the final round, but shot a one-over 71 to allow the other two players to play their way into the playoff. Westwood, who has been atop the world rankings this year despite never winning a major, made nine putts of over 15 feet at last year`s event and four over 25 feet, and he`ll need to continue that trend if he wants to succeed at St. Jude and next week`s U.S. Open. This week continues to be important for players who want to get into the U.S. Open, as the top 50 in the world on June 13 will gain entry into the prestigious event. This week`s field features two of the top-10 in the FedExCup standings in David Toms and Gary Woodland. The Golf Channel will carry the first two rounds of the event, and it will switch over to CBS over the weekend. Next week is the 111th U.S. Open, to be played at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Maryland. Graeme McDowell is the defending champion of the event, and Ernie Els won the last time the U.S. Open was held at that venue.
