* - Defending Champion
It`s the final tune-up for the Masters. Four of the world`s top five - Lee Westwood, Phil Mickelson, Matt Kuchar and Steve Stricker - are heading to Redstone for one last taste of competition before the flight to Augusta National. Six winners this year on tour are in the field as some, like Johnny Vegas and Gary Woodland, gear up for their first trip to the Masters. There`s one grizzled veteran in the field, who won this title in 2003. Fred Couples, who donned the green jacket in 1992, picked up his last PGA Tour victory in Houston eight years ago. He contended at Torrey Pines and tied for seventh at the Northern Trust Open, but last year, finished sixth at the Masters. Last year, Anthony Kim toppled Vaughn Taylor on the first playoff hole to get his first tour win since the 2008 AT&T National. Kim missed a six-foot par save at the 72nd hole that would have won in regulation. He and Taylor tied at 12-under 276 and headed back to the 18th for the extra session. Taylor hit a bad drive in the playoff and played his second into a greenside bunker. Kim reached the green in regulation and had 30 feet for birdie. Taylor only managed to get his third to 18 feet and Kim lagged his birdie putt close. Taylor missed the par save and Kim tapped his in for the victory. Kim got off to a great start this season with three consecutive top 20s, but since a tie for sixth at the Farmers Insurance Open, he`s missed two cuts, withdrew from the Northern Trust Open, lost in the first round of the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship and took 60th at Doral. Golf Channel has Thursday and Friday`s action, then NBC takes over on the weekend. Next week is the Masters from Augusta National, where Mickelson claimed his third green jacket last year.
