NOTES
The PGA Tour returns to Texas for the next two weeks and up first is the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial. Zach Johnson ran away with a three-stroke win last year as he closed with back-to-back 64s. Thanks in part to those 64s, Johnson established a new tournament scoring record with his total of 259. Kenny Perry had posted the old mark of 261 in 2003 and again in 2005. Johnson`s second 64 helped him overtake third-round leader Brian Davis, who parred 10 straight holes at one point in the final round. Davis bogeyed the last to end three back. The final round was twice delayed by lightning creating a long day for the final few groups. Johnson will be one of 13 former champions in the field this week. Perry and 2010 U.S. Ryder Cup captain Corey Pavin are both two-time winners. They will be joined in the field by fellow Champions Tour players, and former Colonial champs, Olin Browne, David Frost, Tom Lehman, Fulton Allem, Tom Purtzer and Keith Clearwater. The senior circuit will be well represented, but the PGA Tour will have only five of the top-20 players in the world, and 15 of the top-50, at Colonial this week. World No. 18 Hunter Mahan the reigning WGC-Bridgestone Invitational champ, is the only reigning WGC or major champion in the field. Golf Channel has coverage on Thursday and Friday, while CBS takes over on the weekend. The tour remains in the Lone Star State next week for the Byron Nelson Championship, where Jason Day is the defending champion.
