Bruiners cruises to win in South Africa
Euphoria, South Africa (Sports Network) - Heinrich Bruiners carded a 1-under 71 on Friday to cruise to a 5-stroke victory at the Vodacom Origins of Golf.
Bruiners, who claimed his first career victory on the Sunshine Tour, finished the tournament at 8-under-par 208.
Jake Roos (69) and Adilson Da Silva (70) shared second place at Euphoria Golf Estate at 3-under, while Allan Versfeld (71) and Desvonde Botes (73) tied for fourth at 2-under 214.
Neil Schietekat (72), Peter Karmis (72) and Jake Redman (73) occupied sixth at minus-1.
Bruiners entered the final round with a 4-stroke lead, but gave two of those shots back with consecutive bogeys at the third and fourth.
He steadied himself with four straight pars before knocking in a short birdie at the ninth. He then opened his inward nine with a bogey at the 10th, but he would not drop another shot for the rest of the day and pulled away for good with an eagle at the 12th that he followed with a birdie at the 13th.
He parred his final five holes to become the first qualifier since 2002 to go on and win the tournament.
"To be honest, I was actually quite relaxed, but I was shaky on the opening holes," Bruiners said. "And when I made those two bogeys in a row, I told myself to go back to the processes which had worked all week for me."
