Machtaler races to win in Ottawa

Ottawa, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - Greg Machtaler fired a 9-under 62 on Sunday as he came from behind to win the Forces and Families Open.

Machtaler's impressive final round placed him at 17-under-par 267 for the tournament, and he then watched as no one was able to catch him to collect his first career win on the PGA Tour Canada.

Jeff Dennis and Peter Campbell carded matching 5-under 66s at Hylands Golf Club to share second place at 16-under 268. Greg Eason (70), who led all three rounds heading into Sunday, finished alone in fourth at minus-15.

Devin Carrey (64), Brent Long (65), Dan Buchner (66), Ryan Brehm (67) and Kelvin Day (68) tied for fifth at 14-under 270.

Machtaler traded an opening birdie with a bogey at the third before starting his race up the leaderboard with an eagle at the eighth. He followed that with a birdie at the ninth to make the turn at 11-under.

After parring the next two holes, Machtaler recorded a birdie at the 12th and an eagle at the 13th to jump to minus-14.

He then capped his impressive round with three birdies over his final four holes to claim the clubhouse lead at 17-under.

Dennis was alongside Machtaler at 16-under before his closing birdie, but he briefly went the other direction with consecutive bogeys at the 12th and 13th. He quickly atoned for those mistakes with birdies at the 14th and 15th.

Dennis, who had first reached minus-16 with four birdies and an eagle around a bogey on his front nine, could not find a way to join Machtaler as he parred his final three holes to end a shot off the pace.

Campbell also reach 16-under with birdies at the eighth, ninth, 10th, 12th, 13th and 16th, but like Dennis, he could not grab a share of the lead to hand the win to Machtaler.

NOTES: In Machtaler's five previous starts this season, he had missed four cuts and tied for 63rd place at the Bayview Place Island Savings Open ... The PGA Tour Canada remains in Ontario in two weeks for the The Great Waterway Classic, which Hugo Leon won last season.
