GAME NOTES: With seven wins in their last 10 games, the Richmond Spiders have been surging in the Atlantic 10, and will attempt to finish strong despite limping into the end of the schedule due to injuries.
Today, the Spiders host the struggling La Salle Explorers in Atlantic 10 action at the Robins Center.
Richmond had a three-game winning streak broken with a 73-65 setback at home against George Washington on Tuesday. ShawnDre' Jones led all scorers with 25 points for the Spiders. Terry Allen added 16 points and nine rebounds and Kendall Anthony scored 14 in the loss. Trey Davis also cleared 10 boards.
The Spiders lost two starting seniors for the season when Cedrick Lindsay tore a meniscus in both knees and Derrick Williams left the team for personal reasons. That leaves Richmond with no seniors in uniform and only two juniors that see court time. Lindsay led the Spiders and was third in the A-10 in scoring at 18.3 ppg at the time of his injury. Williams was averaging 5.8 ppg.
The focal point of Chris Mooney's team is defense. The Spiders are giving up an average of 66.0 ppg, which ranks third in the A-10. Richmond has held the opposition to 64 points or fewer in regulation in 10 of the last 14 contests. They are second in the A-10 in 3-point percentage defense (.288). Anthony, the reigning A-10 player of the week, got off to a slow start Tuesday, but he's (15.8 ppg) the only active player on the current roster to have an average in double figures. The four sophomore forwards, Allen, Trey Davis, Alonzo Nelson- Ododa and Deion Taylor are also a big reason why the Spiders are eight games over .500 for the season.
The Explorers have lost four in a row and seven of their last eight contests. They are coming off a 65-53 defeat at Dayton on Wednesday. It was their fourth straight road loss since a Jan. 12 victory at Duquesne. Jerrell Wright had 15 points on 5-of-6 shooting for the Explorers. Tyreek Duren chipped in 13 points as Steve Zack cleared 10 boards.
Zack (9.4 ppg, 9.7 rpg) leads the A-10 in double-doubles with 13. Duren (14.4 ppg), has scored in double figures in 15 straight games and needs three steals to climb into third place on the school's all-time list. Wright (12.8 ppg) is among the top-10 in the conference in shooting from the field (.555).
The home team has won the last three meetings in this series, but with Richmond's injury issues, this could be a good opportunity for the Explorers to snap their losing streak. The problem though is La Salle is averaging only 68.5 ppg, which ranks next-to-last in the A-10. That doesn't bode well against a team that thrives on the defensive end.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Richmond 66, La Salle 60
