NCAA Game Summary - Miami-Florida at Cal State Fullerton
(Friday, November 29)
Final Score: Miami-Florida 48, Cal State Fullerton 46
Fullerton, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - James Kelly tallied 10 points and seven rebounds as the Miami-Florida Hurricanes outlasted the Cal State Fullerton Titans, 48-46, in the consolation round of the Wooden Legacy at Titan Gym.
No other player finished in double figures for Miami (4-3) in the low-scoring affair. Rion Brown chipped in nine points and eight rebounds for the Hurricanes, who will play the winner of the College of Charleston/Arizona State matchup in Sunday's fifth-place game.
For Fullerton (2-5), Michael Williams paced all scorers with 15 points, although he was just 2-of-9 from 3-point range. Sheldon Blackwell added 13 points and six assists for the hosts.
The first half ended with Miami leading, 23-17. The Hurricanes shot 45.5 percent from the floor but just 1-of-10 from 3-point range, and they also committed 10 turnovers in the opening 20 minutes, which allowed an ice-cold Fullerton (.292) to hang around.
The Hurricanes extended their lead to as many as 15 in the second half, but the Titans would not go quietly, and a Steve McClellan layup with 21 seconds remaining brought them to within two. Miami nearly blew it down the stretch, as Brown and Davon Reed both missed the front end of one-and-one opportunities at the foul line, but Fullerton missed its final three shots, including Chris Collins' attempt at the buzzer.
Miami held on to win despite a lackluster 3-of-10 performance at the foul line.
