Mount Pleasant, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - David Brown scored 17 points on 6- of-10 shooting as the Western Michigan Broncos defeated the Central Michigan Chippewas, 78-64, in a Mid-American Conference tilt at McGuirk Arena.
Connar Tava scored 15 points, and Shayne Whittington and Tucker Haymond each chipped in with 14 points for Western Michigan (21-9, 14-4 MAC), which guarantees the Broncos at least a share of the conference's West Division title. Austin Richie contributed 13 points in the win, which was the team's 10th in its last 11 games.
John Simons tallied 16 points to pace Central Michigan (10-20, 3-15), while Chris Fowler netted 15 with four assists. Braylon Rayson added 13 points for the Chippewas, who dropped four straight contests to end the regular season.
Central Michigan shot 42.4 percent from the floor in the first half, including 6-of-14 from 3-point range, to take a 38-33 lead into the intermission. Western Michigan shot 58.3 percent in the frame, but went just 3-of-6 from 3- point distance.
The Broncos weren't about to let their first-place spot in the standings fade, as they came out in the second half and shot 81 percent from the field, including a perfect 6-of-6 from beyond the arc. There was nothing the Chippewas could do but watch, as they hit 34.8 percent of their field goal tries in the period, and were outscored, 45-26, in the half.
Western Michigan won the battle in points in the paint, 36-28, and had the slight edge in rebounding, 27-23. Central Michigan held the advantage in second chance points, 13-6.
