Vazquez beats Shafikov by unanimous decision to retain title
Macao, China (SportsNetwork.com) - Miguel Vazquez retained his IBF lightweight title on Saturday with a 12-round unanimous decision over previously undefeated challenger Denis Shafikov.
The Mexican Vazquez (34-3, 13 KOs), who won by scores of 115-113, 116-112, and 119-110, returned from a 14-month layoff for his sixth title defense and now has a 13-fight win streak after a 10-round unanimous decision loss to Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez in June of 2008.
Two of Vazquez' three losses have come to Alvarez and the other came at the hands of current WBO welterweight champion, Timothy Bradley.
Shafikov (33-1-1, 18 KOs) of Russia suffered his first loss as a professional.
