Miami, FL (Sports Network) - Storm Johnson rushed for 89 yards and three touchdowns on 18 carries, as the UCF Knights shut out the FIU Panthers, 38-0, on Friday in a non-conference matchup between Sunshine State rivals.
Blake Bortles completed 12-of-19 passes for 214 yards and a touchdown while rushing four times for 22 yards and a score for the Panthers (2-0), who began their 2013 season with a 38-7 victory over Akron.
Jake Medlock got the start under center for FIU (0-2) and finished 16-of-25 passing for 128 yards for the Panthers, who suffered a 43-10 loss to Maryland in their season-opener last week.
After the teams exchanged three-and-outs to start the game, Bortles used his arm and his legs to move the Knights down the field, ripping off a 19-yard run before completing four straight passes to put his team inside the FIU 20.
Johnson then surged ahead for six yards down to the 1-yard line before Bortles punched it in for a 7-0 lead.
UCF doubled its lead on the first play of the second quarter, as Johnson capped a quick 4-play, 44-yard drive with a 2-yard TD run to make it 14-0.
Following another FIU punt, Bortles hooked up with Rannell Hall for 28 yards to move the Knights into scoring range before Shawn Moffitt buried a 37-yard field goal to extend UCF's lead to 17-0 with 8:31 left in the half.
The Knights quickly forced the Panthers to punt the ball away on their ensuing touch and on FIU's next play from scrimmage, Bortles found Hall for 60 yards to the FIU 21.
Facing 3rd-and-5 three plays later, Johnson broke free for a 15-yard score to push the margin to 24-0 with just under four minutes left in the second.
FIU had a chance to crack the scoreboard on its ensuing touch, but Sergio Sroka missed a 34-yard field goal to keep the margin at 24-0 heading into the break.
FIU fumbled the ball away on its second touch of the third quarter, giving the Knights prime field possession at the Panthers' 17-yard line.
After Bortles hit Breshad Perriman for 11 yards down to the 2-yard line, Johnson punched it in two plays later for a 31-0 lead with 7:36 left in the third.
UCF continued to tack on points on its next touch, as Johnson hauled in a 33- yard grab before rushing four straight times to move the ball to the FIU 5. Facing 3rd-and-goal, Bortles hit J.J. Worton in the back of the end zone for a 5-yard score and a 38-0 lead.
UCF's defense stood tall from there, never allowing the Panthers' offense to move past midfield for the remainder of the contest.
