Winston Salem, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - Tanner Price ran for a touchdown, caught another and threw for third and to lead the Wake Forest Demon Deacons to a 34-10 victory over the Maryland Terrapins in an Atlantic Coast Conference matchup at BB&T Field.
Michael Campanaro caught 11 balls for 122 yards and a score for the Demon Deacons (4-3, 2-2 ACC), as he set the Wake Forest career receptions record. Price finished with 231 yards on 26-of-36 passing. Tyree Harris added six catches for 49 yards. Josh Harris carried the ball nine times for 47 yards and a touchdown.
C.J. Brown threw for 137 yards and two interceptions on 15-of-24 passing for the Terrapins (5-2, 1-2). He was relieved midway through the third quarter by Caleb Rowe, who finished the day with 207 yards passing and a touchdown on 12-of-27 efficiency. Levern Jacobs pulled down three balls for 78 yards and a score, while Amba Etta-Tawo caught six passes for 69 yards and Stephon Diggs snagged eight receptions for 67 yards. Brandon Ross ran for just 39 yard on eight carries to lead Maryland.
Wake found the end zone on its opening drive, moving the ball 36 yards in five plays, capped off with a one-yard touchdown run by Josh Harris that gave home team an early 7-0 lead. Harris had the big play on that drive with a 28- yard rush up the middle to get inside the five. The offense was set up in excellent field position after a defensive stop and a good punt return gave it the ball at the Maryland 36-yard line. Chad Hedlund boomed a 51-yard field goal as time expired in the first quarter to extend Wake's lead to 10-0.
The Terps got on the board with a 23-yard field goal with 10 minutes remaining in the half but the Demon Deacons closed out the half with two late scores to take a commanding lead at the break. First after a Brown interception and long return gave Wake the ball at the Maryland 18-yard line, Price rushed it in from four yards out to finish off a five-play, 18-yard drive. Then after the defense intercepted Brown again, and again giving the offense the ball in Maryland territory, Price drove his team in for the score in five plays and caught the touchdown pass from Campanaro on a reverse play to give Wake a 24-3 going into the locker room.
After Rowe replace Brown, Terps finally found the end zone midway through the third when Rowe connected with Jacobs on a 56-yard touchdown pass. That drive took just two plays to go 76 yards, cutting the Demon Deacon lead to 24-10. Wake answered on their next series, driving 88 yards in nine plays, finished off by a 10-yard touchdown pass from Price to Campanaro that extended their lead to 31-10 with just under three minutes left in the third. The Demon Deacons finished off the scoring on the day with another field goal from Hedlund midway through the fourth, this one from 38 yards out, that set the final score at 38-10.
Price became the first player in school history and only the second ACC player since 2000 to record a passing, rushing and receiving touchdown in the same game. The Wake defense came up big, forcing three turnovers and holding Maryland to 307 yards of total offense and just 3-of-12 on third down conversions.
