GAMES NOTES: After both teams got off to bad starts in Summit League play, the IUPUI Jaguars and South Dakota Coyotes will try to bounce back when the two meet up at the DakotaDome Saturday night.
IUPUI has lost four of its last five games including a 79-65 defeat on the road to UMKC in the conference opener. The setback dropped the Jaguars to 3-5 overall this season and 0-2 in away games. That's bad news for IUPUI which plays its next two games on the road as well.
South Dakota had won back-to-back games for the first time this season before a heartbreaking 73-71 loss to Western Illinois in its conference opener. South Dakota is 3-4 overall this season but two of those victories have come against competition below the Division I level. South Dakota will also be on the road in its next two contests.
These two teams met for the first time last season and split the season series.
In its loss to UMKC, IUPUI really struggled in the first half shooting 34.6 percent while totaling only nine field goals. Despite an improvement to 48.4 percent shooting in the second half the 45-26 deficit at the half proved too much to overcome. In his first start of the season P. J. Hubert led four players in double figures with 18 points, including a 4-of-5 effort from 3- point range.
Such poor offensive numbers were out of the ordinary for the Jaguars who normally score at a relatively strong rate of 71.6 points per game. IUPUI also shoots a respectable percentage (45.2) but has had trouble stopping other teams by allowing 73.6 points per game on 45.8 percent shooting. IUPUI also has a negative differential on the boards (-3.9). Mitchell Patton (15.9 ppg, 6.0 rpg) and John Hart (15.0 ppg) are normally the top offensive options and the only ones to be averaging in double figures. Donovan Gibbs (9.4 ppg, 8.2 rpg) can hang up a double-double from time to time and Hubert (7.9 ppg) showed how capable he can be when given more playing time. Greg Rice (7.8 ppg) is the only other player scoring more than six points a game.
South Dakota clawed its way back in the final minute of its matchup with Western Illinois. After trailing 67-60 with under a minute remaining, Juevol Myles' 3-pointer with seven seconds left tied the game at 71-71. However Ceola Clark hit a shot at the buzzer on the other end to grab the win from the Coyotes. Myles had a game-high 21 points, while handing out five assists in the losing effort.
Like IUPUI, South Dakota is also scoring with reasonable success, averaging 72.1 points per game on 45.0 percent shooting. The Coyotes are also similar to the Jaguars in their defensive efforts, allowing 74.9 points per game while falling victim to a -5.3 deficit in rebounding. Myles (14.3 ppg, 4.3 apg) is the top scoring option as well as the lead facilitator on offense. However he could certainly stand to improve on his efficiency (37.2 FG percentage). Karim Rowson (11.9 ppg, 4.9 rpg) and Trevor Gruis (10.6 ppg, 6.6 rpg) are also scoring in double figures and serve as the two best rebounders on the roster. Tyler Flack (9.7 ppg, 4.7 rpg) and Casey Kasperbauer (9.4 ppg) can also score when called upon.
In a game of evenly matched teams the difference will be which squad can maintain its offensive rhythm. South Dakota's advantage of playing on its home floor is a nice bonus.
