GAME NOTES: The Green Bay Phoenix try to continue their dominance at the Resch Center on Thursday night, as they entertain the Wright State Raiders in Horizon League action.
Winners of all but one of their 10 home dates this season, the Phoenix have captured victories in two of their last three outings, thanks to a 73-65 triumph over Loyola-Chicago last Saturday. With a record of 6-4 in league play, Green Bay is tied with Wright State for third place in the standings at the moment as well.
The Raiders had been cruising along with just four defeats through the first 17 games of 2012-13, but in less than a month the team has fallen four times now. On Monday night, Wright State was able to snap a three-game slide with a 62-59 victory against Loyola-Chicago at home.
Wright State won the first meeting of the season with Green Bay last month with a 64-53 triumph at home, as Reggie Arceneaux tallied 15 points and eight assists, while the defense for the Raiders held the Phoenix to a mere 36.2 percent shooting from the floor and forced 18 turnovers.
With the victory, the Raiders are now within a game of tying the all-time series, which still favors Green Bay by a 24-23 count.
Cole Darling's jumper with 1:18 remaining in regulation broke the second tie of the game and gave Wright State the lead and eventual win over Loyola- Chicago on Monday. Darling finished the meeting with 17 points on 8-of-13 shooting from the floor, adding six rebounds and four steals, while Jerran Young tacked on another 11 points in just 12 minutes off the bench before fouling out. Darling, who has missed four games this season, leads the team in scoring with 11.4 ppg and is also first in rebounding with close to five per game, yet for someone who has his hands on the ball as much as he does, shouldn't Darling have more than 11 assists even by accident? Reggie Arceneaux accounts for another 10.0 ppg and 67 dishes in order to try and make up for his 36.1 percent shooting from the floor.
Alec Brown tallied a career-high 25 points, shooting 10-of-14 from the floor for the Phoenix last Saturday, as the team dismissed Loyola at the Gentile Center for just their second true road win of 2012-13. Sultan Muhammad accounted for 14 points, Cole Stefan 13 and Jordan Fouse eight points to go along with 13 rebounds, four assists and three steals. Keifer Sykes played just 16 minutes and was held scoreless before making his exit because of an ankle injury that again has him listed as questionable for the meeting with Wright State. Some more news for Green Bay finds starting forward Daniel Turner missing the rest of the campaign for the second straight season due to injury as he tore the ACL in his left knee over the weekend. Now Green Bay needs Brennan Cougill to come on strong (11.2 ppg, 6.1 rpg) and refrain from shooting too much from 3-point range (8-of-46) if the team hopes to remain competitive.
Green Bay has been tough at home this season for sure, but the recent run of injuries will probably open the door just far enough for the Raiders to slip through on Thursday night.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Wright State 66, Green Bay 60
