GAME NOTES: Undefeated over their first six games, the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles start a three-game road trip on Saturday with a visit to Las Cruces to take on the Aggies of New Mexico State in a non-conference affair.
The Golden Eagles are coming off a 61-50 home decision over Denver on Tuesday to remain undefeated in Donnie Tyndall's first season at the helm in Hattiesburg. A win here would match the 7-0 start in the 2006-07 campaign, when the Golden Eagles lost to Alabama in their eighth game.
New Mexico State fell a game below .500 after losing at Texas-El Paso, 55-54 on Wednesday. The setback halted a little bit of momentum for the Aggies, who had won two straight games prior to that.
This series is tied up at 3-3. Although these teams are in different conferences, the Golden Eagles beat the Aggies twice last season. Southern Miss rallied for an 80-72 win in the semifinals of the Great Alaska Shootout. A week later, Southern Miss earned a 74-66 victory in Hattiesburg.
Senior guard Dwayne Davis led the way with 22 points in Southern Miss' win over Denver this week. Davis put on a shooting clinic by making 8-of-10 attempts from the field, his only three-point try, and all five of his free throws for Southern Miss, which is off to a 6-0 start for the first time since 2006-07. Jerrold Brooks added 12 points, Neil Watson dished out five assists, and Michael Craig pulled down nine rebounds to help power the win. Davis paces the team with 16.2 points while pulling down 5.2 rebounds. Brooks and senior forward Jonathan Mills are both averaging 9.7 points, while Mills is grabs a team-high 7.5 boards a game. Southern Miss, which has trailed for only 23 1/2 minutes of game time all season, is allowing just 57.3 points.
A pair of Chris Washburn free throws with only seconds remaining turned the tide for the Miners, as they topped New Mexico State by a single point. The Aggies were paced by Tyrone Watson who tallied 13 points, the only player to score in double figures for the visitors. There isn't a whole lot of scoring punch for the Aggies, who are netting a mere 67.9 ppg. The team has been strong on the boards though this year, averaging just over 40 caroms per contest (40.1). Sophomore guard Daniel Mullings and senior forward Tyrone Watson pace team with 13.0 points per game each, and senior forward Bandja Sy contributes 8.6 points per game.
The Aggies may be a game under .500 this season, but all three of their victories have come in Las Cruces. The Golden Eagles have run the table thus far, but that could end here.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: New Mexico State 70, Southern Miss 67
