GAME NOTES: The UAB Blazers are still on the hunt for their first conference win as they travel to Houston to face off against the Cougars in a Conference USA matchup at the Hofheinz Pavilion.
The Blazers are coming off a 91-85 loss to East Carolina. The loss was the fifth in a row for UAB and came at the end of a three-game winning streak at home. With the loss, the Blazers are 8-11 on the season and 0-4 in league action.
The Cougars recently suffered an 87-72 loss to Tulsa. The setback extended Houston's current slide to four games and dropped the team to a still respectable 12-6 overall. Conference play has presented a much stiffer challenge, as Houston is just 1-4 in the C-USA.
UAB leads the all-time series 18-5 and took the last meeting 80-69 last February. It was the third win in a row for the Blazers against Houston.
Rod Rucker scored 20 points with 12 rebounds for the Blazers in the loss to East Carolina. Jordan Swing added 16 points and eight rebounds off the bench. UAB allowed ECU to shoot 55.2 percent from the field and 58.8 percent from beyond the arc which spoiled their high-scoring performance. The squad averages 73.4 ppg led by Rucker's 14.1 ppg and 8.5 rpg. Swing adds 13.3 ppg and 6.0 rpg, while Terence Jones contributes 10.5 ppg. Fahro Alihodzic is averaging just under double digits in scoring with 9.7 ppg. Although they play solid offense, the team allows 73.6 ppg (307th in the nation) off 44.4 percent shooting by opponents.
In the loss to Tulsa, Joseph Young posted 16 points, Danuel House scored 15, and TsShawn Thomas put together his eighth double-double of the season with 12 points and 13 rebounds. The Cougars are impressive offensively, scoring 77.5 ppg, ranking 25th in the nation. The unit shoots 45.3 percent from the field. Young leads the way with 16.9 ppg on 45.6 percent shooting and is closely followed by Thomas, who scores 15.7 ppg on 50.4 percent shooting, while leading the team with 10.0 rpg. House also averages double-figure scoring with 13.7 ppg. The defensive end is where Houston has struggled, allowing 70.4 ppg (268th nationally).
While Houston's defense is bad, UAB's is worse. The Cougars should be able to take advantage with their scoring ability.
