NCAA Game Summary - Niagara vs. Quinnipiac

Springfield, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Led by 20 points from Shaq Shannon, the third-seeded Quinnipiac Bobcats downed the 11th-seeded Niagara Purple Eagles, 89-80, in quarterfinal-round action of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament.

The Bobcats (20-10) had five players score in double figures, as Ike Azotam added 18 points, Ousmane Drame posted a double-double with 15 points and 16 rebounds, Zaid Hearst scored 15 and Evan Conti chipped in with 12 points and six assists. Quinnipiac takes on second-seeded Manhattan in the semifinals on Sunday night.

Antoine Mason led all scorers with 28 points for the Purple Eagles (7-26), while Marvin Jordan added 15 points and Wesley Myers scored 14.

Quinnipiac was hot from the floor to start the contest, connecting on 59.3 percent of its shots, including 4-of-7 from beyond the arc. The Bobcats trailed by 10 points midway through the first but were able to rally and gain a 38-36 advantage at the break. Niagara shot just 41.9 percent in the first half, but managed to knock down 4-of-11 from 3-point range to keep close.

After intermission, Quinnipiac continued to drain shots at an impressive clip, shooting 57.1 percent from the field in the final 20 minutes, including 4-of-6 from beyond the arc. Niagara improved somewhat, making 44.1 percent of its field goal tries, but just 4-of-14 from 3-point distance. Holding just a four- point lead, 61-57, with just over 10 minutes to play, the Bobcats ran off nine straight points to take a double-digit lead, which they held on down the stretch for the victory, getting a postseason win in their first year in the MAAC.

Quinnipiac had the advantage down low, outscoring Niagara in the paint, 42-32. The Bobcats also dominated on the glass by outrebounding the Purple Eagles, 42-29.
