In the opening half the Mavericks connected on 55.2 percent of their shots from the floor, including 5-of-13 from 3-point range. The Trojans also hit 5- of-13 from beyond the arc, but shot just 41.4 percent overall. However, Troy earned a 7-0 scoring edge at the free-throw line and trailed by a single point (37-36) at the break.

Both teams hit on 11-of-27 shots from the floor in the second half. UTA managed to build a 14-point lead with 6:35 to play in regulation, but Troy closed the second half on a 16-2 run, capped by a 3-pointer from Calhoun with 34 seconds to play, to force overtime.

Although the Trojans were never able to take the lead in the first overtime, they evened the score five times in the frame, the final time coming with 33 seconds remaining when Jeff Mullahey got a layup to fall. Dowell was able to get a shot off at the buzzer, but it was off the mark.

Dowell made up for it in the second overtime when he hit a 3-pointer and a jumper on consecutive possessions in the final two minutes to push UTA ahead 84-81. The Mavericks then went 3-of-5 at the free-throw line to hold on for the win.
