GAME NOTES: Still looking for their first victory of 2014, the struggling Citadel Bulldogs do battle with the Davidson Wildcats in a Southern Conference matchup at Belk Arena Saturday afternoon.
The Bulldogs are winless in their last 11 contests, and have yet to notch a victory in conference play this season. They fell at Georgia Southern on Thursday night, 83-52.
The Wildcats have been much more successful, having won four straight and seven of their last 10. Also on Thursday night, Davidson took out the Chattanooga Mocs at home, 94-51.
Davidson leads the all-time series, 96-45. The Wildcats have won four straight and are 53-10 at home and have won 21 of the last 23 overall against the Bulldogs.
Ashton Moore was the bright spot for the struggling Bulldogs with 14 points in the loss to Georgia Southern. The Citadel scored the first six points of the game, but Georgia Southern took control with a massive 29-0 run that spanned 12:03 of the opening frame to take a commanding lead and pull away for the victory.
Matt Van Scyoc has been playing very well for The Citadel despite the team's poor overall performance. The 6-foot-6 sophomore wing is ranked eighth in the SoCon in scoring at 15.5 ppg, and freshman Brian White is leading all rookies in the league with 13.0 ppg. Moore is chiming in with 12.4 ppg and has knocked down 44 shots from 3-point range. The Bulldogs are scoring 68.4 ppg but giving up 76.2 ppg, which is the worst yield in the league.
Led by De'Mon Brooks' 10th career double-double, Davidson placed four players in double figures and shot 59.2 percent from the floor as the Wildcats ran past Chattanooga in Belk Arena. Brooks finished with 27 points, connecting on 12-of-18 attempts. Jordan Barham also contributed down low with 16 points on 8-of-9 shooting, while Tom Droney and Tyler Kalinoski tallied 11 points apiece. Droney also handed out a career-high eight assists and pulled down five rebounds.
Davidson is averaging a conference-best 83.1 ppg while shooting 53 percent from the field and 43.9 percent from 3-point range against league foes, all tops in the conference. Former SoCon Player of the Year Brooks is having another stellar campaign while serving as the Wildcats' go-to-guy at the offensive end, producing 18.2 ppg to go along with 7.3 rpg. Brian Sullivan chimes in with 12.3 ppg, while Droney (11.3 ppg) and Kalinoski (11.1 ppg) are also scoring in double figures with some consistency.
With the best offense in the Southern Conference hosting the worst defense, expect the Wildcats to easily handle the woeful Bulldogs.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Davidson 78, The Citadel 62
