Big South Conference Tournament Recaps (Thursday, March 7th)Final Score: Charleston Southern 54, Winthrop 47 Conway, SC (Sports Network) - Mathiang Muo registered a double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds as Charleston Southern took a 54-47 decision over Winthrop in Big South Conference Tournament quarterfinal action at HTC Center. Arlon Harper added 11 points and five boards for the Buccaneers (18-11), who made just 14-of-50 shots from the floor but went 19-of-21 from the free throw line. Charleston Southern, the top seed out of the South division, advances to the semifinals to face second the seed of the north, VMI, on Saturday. Joab Jerome paced Winthrop (14-17), which was seeded fifth in the South, with 15 points in defeat. Gideon Gamble scored 10 points with six rebounds for the Eagles, who shot a mere 32 percent (16-of-50) from the floor that included a 4-of-28 finish from behind the arc. Final Score: VMI 90, Longwood 86 Conway, SC (Sports Network) - Stan Okoye led three VMI players in double- figures with 31 points and nine rebounds as the Keydets edged Longwood, 90-86, on Thursday in Big South Conference quarterfinal action. D.J. Covington had 26 points on 12-of-18 shooting and Rodney Glasgow scored 22 for the second-seeded Keydets (14-16), who move on to face top-seeded Charleston Southern in the semifinals on Saturday. Michael Kessens scored a game-high 36 points to go along with 16 rebounds for the Lancers (8-25), while Lucas Woodhouse followed with 16 points and nine assists in defeat. Final Score: Garddner-Webb 71, Campbell 57 Conway, SC (Sports Network) - Tashan Newsome scored 15 points to lead all five starters in double figures as the Gardner-Webb Bulldogs defeated the Campbell Camels, 71-57, in the quarterfinals of the Big South Tournament at the HTC Center. Tyler Strange had 14 points, Donta Harper and Kevin Hartley each registered 12 and Jerome Hill chipped in 10 as Gardner-Webb (21-11) advanced to the semi-finals on Saturday. Marvelle Harris recorded 13 points and eight rebounds and Trey Freeman had 11 points to go with five assists for Campbell (13-20). The Bulldogs outscored the Camels 22-6 from the free-throw line and had a 36-28 edge on the boards in the win.
