GAME NOTES: Winners of three of their four Colonial Athletic Association road tests this season, the Delaware Blue Hens shoot for positive results again as they challenge the Towson Tigers in Maryland on Wednesday night.
Since losing three straight games against league foes, the Blue Hens have turned around and won three consecutive CAA bouts in order to move to 6-3 in conference. Last Saturday, the team easily knocked off UNC-Wilmington at home in Newark by a score of 71-56. With a record of 6-3 in conference play entering the week, Delaware was all alone in second place in the standings behind only Northeastern.
As for the Tigers, they kicked off the week on Monday with an 81-68 thumping of UNCW at home, marking the squad's second straight win and the seventh in 11 opportunities in the CAA this season after winning a grand total of just one game all of 2011-12.
Towson won the first meeting of the season between the squads last month at the Bob Carpenter Center, 69-66, as Jerrell Benimon led four players in double figures with his 19 points, adding 13 rebounds and five assists, but at the same time he came close to recording a dubious triple-double with his eight turnovers. Despite the victory, the Tigers still trail in the all-time series by a count of 41-28.
Delaware took down the Seahawks for the fifth straight time at the Bob last Saturday, thanks to the efforts of Jamelle Hagins who was one of three starters in double figures with his 20 points, adding a game-high 11 rebounds as well. Devon Saddler actually led all scorers with 21 points, while Jarvis Threatt tacked on 15 points for a squad that failed to make a single 3-point basket (0-of-11). Delaware won the battle of the boards, 41-29, and connected on 21-of-26 at the charity stripe in order to offset 14 turnovers and the poor showing on the perimeter. A starter in every game this season, Hagins is second on the unit with his 12.4 ppg, but is by far the biggest influence in the paint with not only 10.7 rpg but also 51 blocked shots. Saddler produces 19.3 ppg, making him one of the top scorers in the conference, while his 64 assists keep his teammates involved in the action at the offensive end of the floor as well.
Jerrelle Benimon registered a double-double with 20 points and 12 rebounds as the Towson Tigers posted the double-digit win over the Seahawks of UNC- Wilmington in CAA action at the Towson Center two nights ago. Jerome Hairston accounted for 18 points, Rafriel Guthrie 14 off the bench and Marcus Damas 12 points for the Tigers as they shot an impressive 57.1 percent from the field in the first half, including 3-of-6 behind the 3-point line in order to establish a double-digit cushion. Benimon continues to be the dominant force for the Tigers on the inside as he averages a double-double consisting of 17.0 points and 11.5 rebounds per contest. Making his efforts this season even more impressive is the fact that Benimon is also first on the team in assists (59) and blocked shots (52) which makes him indispensable. The only other double- digit scorer for the program is Damas with his 10.3 ppg, although he might be smart to give up his aspirations of being a 3-point threat (18-of-74).
Benimon is certainly a tough competitor in the paint for the Tigers, but Delaware just seems to have more options on offense these days, as well as the confidence to win on the road.
