GAME NOTES: A pair of struggling teams take a break from their respective conference schedules to square off in BracketBuster matchup, as the Central Michigan Chippewas play host to the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders tonight at McGuirk Arena in Mount Pleasant.
Texas A&M-CC has had a rough go of it this season, winning just four of its 25 games, and it currently sits in last place in the Southland Conference West Division standings with a 3-9 mark. The Islanders have lost six in a row, with their latest setback coming against Texas State on Wednesday, 79-61.
Central Michigan got off to a promising start to the campaign, opening up at 4-2, but that's about all the positive that can be said its year. The Chippewas are 8-17 overall and 3-9 in the MAC, sitting only ahead of lowly Northern Illinois in the West Division standings. They had lost a season-long nine straight games before finally halting that streak with a 55-52 win over Eastern Michigan on Tuesday.
This game represents the first-ever meeting between these two schools on the hardwood.
Given its record, it's no surprise that Texas A&M-CC has struggled on offense this season as it averages just 58.1 ppg while shooting 38.8 percent overall and 29.8 percent from three-point range. Terence Jones has been the Islanders' top performer, netting 14 ppg in hitting 2.2 three-pointers per contest, but he is just 37.6 percent accurate on his total field goal attempts. Chris Hawkins-Mast tallies 12.2 ppg and 6.0 rpg, and Myron Dempsey scores 8.8 ppg while grabbing a team-high 7.7 rpg. As a collective unit, Texas A&M-CC owns a rebounding margin of -3.0 and turns the ball over an average of 15 times per game.
Central Michigan has been lackluster at both ends of the court this season, ranking ninth in the MAC in both scoring offense (61.5 ppg) and scoring defense (67.2 ppg). Though the Chippewas scored only 55 points in Tuesday's win, they hit 46.9 percent of their shots overall and held Eastern Michigan to just 41 percent. Austin McBroom paced the squad with 14 points and now averages 10.5 ppg on the year. Trey Zeigler has been the Chippewas' best player, ranking in the top-10 in the conference in both scoring (15.2 ppg) and rebounding (6.8 rpg) while shooting a solid 45.9 percent from the field. Derek Jackson adds 10.9 ppg and 1.8 three-pointers per game to the mix. CMU takes good care of the basketball, sporting a turnover margin of +2.0.
All signs point to an ugly game, but Central Michigan has at least showed some promise in front of its home crowd this season and should be able to take down the lowly Islanders.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Central Michigan 65, Texas A&M-CC 53
