Santa Clara, CA (Sports Network) - Jalen Jones scored a team-high 19 points as
the SMU Mustangs cruised by the Alcorn State Braves, 67-52, in the third-place
game of the Cable Car Classic at the Leavey Center.
Jones was only one rebound shy of a double-double for the Mustangs (9-4). Nick
Russell and Shawn Williams contributed 14 and 12 points, respectively, while
Cannen Cunningham tallied eight points and 10 boards.
For the Braves (2-11), Marquiz Baker scored a game-high 24 points, but no
other Alcorn State player scored in double figures.
Despite Alcorn State going on a 5-0 run to start the game, SMU battled back to
take a 33-23 advantage at the break. The Mustangs shot 47.8 percent from the
field in the first half, compared to just 29.4 percent for the Braves.
SMU continued its solid play in the second half, making 57.9 percent from the
field, while limiting Braves to just 3-of-16 from 3-point range after halftime
in the 15-point decision.
The Mustangs won the rebounding battle, 35-23, which helped overcome a game-
high 22 turnovers.
