Rochester, MI (Sports Network) - Ryan Bass scored 20 points, leading all five
starters in double figures, as the Oakland Golden Grizzlies posted a 91-79 win
over the Mavericks of Nebraska Omaha in Summit League action at the O'rena.
Going down the list, Travis Bader dropped in 19 points for the Golden
Grizzlies (7-9, 2-1 Summit), Duke Mondy tallied 18 points, nine assists and
six steals, followed by Corey Petros with 16 points and eight rebounds and
Drew Valentine who managed to register a double-double with 12 points and 10
boards, not to mention five assists and a couple of thefts as Oakland won for
the third time in the last four outings.
The Mavericks (4-13, 1-4) were paced by Justin Simmons who scored a game-high
24 points, followed by John Karhoff with 14 as the team bowed for the third
time in four tries.
Oakland opened the meeting on a 5-0 run but allowed the visitors to hang
around before building the advantage to double digits at 48-38, en route to
the 50-42 edge at the break. The Grizzlies dominated in the paint, outscoring
Omaha by a 20-10 margin, not to mention trading in Mavericks turnovers for 19
points in the period.
In the second half Oakland again played well in the paint and never
relinquished the lead, overcoming a mere 1-of-7 showing at the free-throw line
by shooting 51.4 percent from the floor.
Oakland finished the contest a dismal 10-of-19 at the charity stripe, but
thanks to 20 Omaha turnovers that were exchanged for 36 points it never became
an issue.
