Charlottesville, VA (Sports Network) - Devon Saddler scored a team-best 19
points, leading four players in double figures, as the Delaware Blue Hens
topped the Penn Quakers, 84-69, as part of the NIT Season Tip-Off at John Paul
Jones Arena.
Saddler, who shot just 4-of-13 from the floor, added eight rebounds, four
assists and three steals, but was also charged with eight turnovers for the
Blue Hens (1-1) in their first victory of the 2012-13 campaign. Josh Brinkley
came up a rebound shy of a double-double as he tallied 15 points, followed by
Terrell Rogers and Jarvis Threatt with 14 and 12 points, respectively.
The Quakers (1-1) were paced by Fran Dougherty who dropped in a game-high 21
points, shooting 6-of-8 from the field and 7-of-11 at the free-throw line.
Miles Cartwright tacked on 20 points and five assists before picking up his
fifth personal foul.
Penn led by as many as five points in the first half as the team shot a solid
50.0 percent from the floor, but the squad also struggled at the free-throw
line, 7-of-16, which allowed the Hens to take a 43-35 advantage at the break.
In the second half Delaware pulled away thanks to 52.0 percent accuracy from
the field and 15-of-20 at the charity stripe, en route to the 15-point
triumph.
Both teams turned the ball over 18 times and Penn also had a tough time
defending the Blue Hens on the glass as Delaware posted a 47-24 rebounding
advantage.
With the win the Blue Hens will now take on Virginia in the next round of the
tournament on Tuesday, with Penn squaring off against Fairfield in the early
game.
