(Saturday, January 26th)
Final Score: Iowa State 73, (11) Kansas State 67
Ames, IA (Sports Network) - Will Clyburn led the way with 24 points and 10
rebounds as Iowa State upended No. 11 Kansas State, 73-67, on Saturday at
James H. Hilton Coliseum.
Georges Niang followed with 15 points and Korie Lucious contributed 10 points
with eight assists for the Cyclones (14-5, 4-2 Big 12), who bounced back from
Wednesday's loss to Texas Tech in capturing their fourth win in five games.
"We didn't put our head down, we kept trusting our offense," said Iowa State
coach Fred Hoiberg.
Iowa State, which connected on 11-of-22 shots from beyond the arc, received 11
points off the bench from Tyrus McGee, who was 3-for-4 from long distance for
the game. Melvin Ejim totaled six points and 10 rebounds in the victory.
Will Spradling scored 15 points in the second consecutive loss for Kansas
State (15-4, 4-2), which fell to No. 3 Kansas on Tuesday. Rodney McGruder
tallied 13 points and seven rebounds, while Shane Southwell added 11 points in
the defeat.
"They made the plays down the stretch," said Kansas State coach Bruce Weber.
"The thing that made us good for most of the season is that we guarded and
out-toughed and out-played people. We've been getting beat on the offensive
glass and for loose balls, they played at home and played at a high level."
A closely contested second half was marked in favor of Kansas State, 56-55,
following a triple from Southwell, but Iowa State responded with a key 8-0
surge to take control.
Ejim's dunk capped the spurt and he added another jam at the 3:48 mark to give
the Cyclones a 65-58 advantage and a lead they would not surrender.
Spradling buried a triple with just over two minutes left to bring the
Wildcats within 68-65, but they never came any closer, as Lucious' jumper with
23 seconds to go gave the Cyclones a five-point cushion to all but seal the
victory.
The win was Iowa State's 18th consecutive victory at home dating back to last
season and its third consecutive over Kansas State.
The Cyclones got going early, as McGee knocked down his second triple during a
10-0 run for Iowa State to put them ahead 24-15 with 6:21 to play in the
opening half.
McGruder ended a 5 1/2 minute swoon for Kansas State with a triple and
Martavious Irving added one of his own soon after in sparking a 7-0 run to
close out the half, staking the Wildcats to a 27-26 advantage.
The Cyclones, however, retook the lead quickly, as Lucious, Clyburn and Ejim
knocked down consecutive 3-pointers to start second half to put Iowa State on
top 35-29.
Later in the stanza, Kansas State rallied to tie the game at 49-49 after
Spradling followed Angel Rodriguez's three-point play with a four-point play,
as he drew a foul on a made 3-point attempt.
The contest remained a one possession game until the Cyclones' ripped off
eight answered points to grab a stranglehold of the momentum.
Game Notes
Rodriguez finished with nine points and six assists for Kansas State, which
shot 50.9 percent for the game ... Iowa State had 18 second chance points
compared to the Wildcats' two.
