NCAA Game Summary - Stony Brook at Connecticut
(Sunday, November 25th)
Final Score: (21) Connecticut 73, Stony Brook 62
Storrs, CT (Sports Network) - Shabazz Napier sparked a 3-point second-half
barrage that propelled the 21st-ranked Connecticut Huskies to a 73-62 victory
over the Stony Brook Seawolves.
Napier, the reigning Big East player of the week, scored 19 points for
Connecticut (5-1), which was coming off Monday's loss to New Mexico in the
championship game of the Paradise Jam in the Virgin Islands.
Niels Giffey had 15 points and eight rebounds for the Huskies, whose last
eight made field goals were from behind the arc.
Dave Coley paced Stony Brook (4-2) with 15 points, while Tommy Brenton added
14.
"They are a ranked team for a reason," Stony Brook coach Steve Pikiell said.
"You never get a break from the other team, so you have to play well against
good teams and we didn't play well enough today."
Despite playing regular-season games on consecutive days for the first time
since November of 2001, the Seawolves got off to the better start and led
31-26 at halftime.
A Brenton dunk put Stony Brook up 39-35 seven minutes into the second half,
but Omar Calhoun and DeAndre Daniels hit jumpers to start a 10-0 run and pull
UConn even before the Huskies seized control behind their 3-point shooting.
Napier and Giffey both hit from long range, and Calhoun answered Jameel
Warney's putback with a trey of his own for a 48-41 lead.
The advantage swelled to 61-47 when Napier completed a 4-point play with 4:16
remaining. UConn then sealed the win at the foul line.
"I think the guys played hard. The first half, of course, we couldn't make a
shot, and they were just out-toughing us," Connecticut coach Kevin Ollie said.
"The second half, we came out and played better. We rebounded, we got out on
the break and we just started making a lot of threes."
