| NOTES: |
|
The Nationwide Children's Hospital Invitational begins this week in Columbus,
Ohio. The top 22 players on the money list are scheduled to compete. Paul
Haley II currently leads the money list by more than $4,000 over Casey
Wittenberg. Wittenberg is the only two-time winner on tour this season. If he
wins this week, he would receive a promotion to the PGA Tour.
This week's event is being held at the Ohio State University's Scarlet Course,
which was designed by Dr. Alister MacKenzie in 1938. Golf legend and Ohio
State alum Jack Nicklaus renovated the course in 2005. Golf Digest rated the
Scarlet Course as one of the top collegiate golf courses in the country.
Last year, Harris English birdied the final hole to become the third amateur
winner in Nationwide Tour history. English fired rounds of 66-66-68-70 to win
by one stroke over Kyle Reifers and fellow amateur John Peterson. He finished
at 14-under-par 270. The Georgia Bulldog joined Daniel Summerhays and Russell
Henley as amateurs that have won on the Nationwide Tour. Summerhays was the
first amateur winner, when he won this event in 2007. Henley claimed the
Stadion Classic earlier in 2011.
English will not be on hand to defend his title, as he is currently playing on
the PGA Tour as a professional. He is 75th on the PGA Tour money list with
over $865,000 in earnings.
The par-71 Scarlet Course featured a scoring average of 71.017 for the week
last year. For the fourth straight year, the course was ranked in the top 10
of toughest courses on tour.
In 2009, Derek Lamely overcame an 8-shot deficit and then parred the second
extra hole from three feet to defeat then-amateur Rickie Fowler for his first
career Nationwide Tour title. Lamely's 8-shot comeback was the largest on tour
in 2009 and the biggest since Jim Rutledge came from nine shots back at the
2006 New Zealand PGA Championship.
Bill Lunde chipped in for birdie on the 18th hole in the final round of 2008
to earn his first Nationwide Tour victory. Lunde, the third-round leader, lost
a 2-shot edge thanks to back-to-back bogeys at the 15th and 16th holes, but
his birdie at the 72nd hole gave him the win. Lunde carded rounds of
67-72-67-73 and finished the tournament at 5-under 279 for a 1-stroke victory
over Dustin Bray.
In 2007, Summerhays played like a veteran and became the first amateur ever to
win on the Nationwide Tour. Summerhays closed with a 2-under 69 in the final
round and finished at 6-under 278 to beat Chad Collins and Chris Nallen by
two shots. Summerhays turned professional three days after winning the
tournament.
Ohio State alumni who are current or past members of the Nationwide Tour are:
Ryan Armour, Mike Austin, Stephen Gangluff, Craig Kanada, Greg Ladehoff, Gary
Nicklaus, Chris Perry, Steve Runge, Chris Smith, Ted Tryba and Chris Wollmann.
The Nationwide Tour travels to Nebraska next week for the Cox Classic, where
J.J. Killeen captured the 2011 title.
