Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Mike James scored on a 25-yard rushing
touchdown in overtime to cap a 17-point comeback for the Miami-Florida
Hurricanes as they took down the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, 42-36, in
Atlantic Coast Conference action at Bobby Dodd Stadium.
James finished with 89 yards rushing while scoring three of his four
touchdowns in the fourth quarter and overtime for Miami (3-1, 2-0 ACC).
Stephen Morris threw for 436 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 31-of-52
passing. Phillip Dorsett (nine catches, 184 yards, TD) and Davon Johnson
(seven catches, 107 yards) were Morris' favorite targets in the receiving
The Hurricanes have won consecutive games for the first time since October of
Georgia Tech (2-2, 1-2) had three players rush for 50 or more yards, led by
Zach Laskey who finished with 82. Tevin Washington scored three touchdowns on
the ground while throwing for 132 yards on just 3-of-8 passing. The Yellow
Jackets had won back-to-back games entering play.
It was a quick start for the Hurricanes, who took a 7-0 lead less than a
minute into the game on a 65-yard strike from Morris to Dorsett.
Miami made it 12-0 following a 38-yard field goal by Jake Wieclaw and a
James scored on a one-yard run on the final play of the first quarter as the
Hurricanes' lead ballooned to 19-0.
The Yellow Jackets responded with 36 consecutive points, starting with an
Orwin Smith eight-yard touchdown run at the 11:23 mark of the second
quarter to cut the deficit to 19-7.
Georgia Tech continued to close the gap with a two-yard rushing touchdown by
Washington just a few minutes later.
The Yellow Jackets took a 22-19 lead on a 10-yard rushing touchdown by
Washington and a successful two-point conversion with under four minutes to
play in the half.
Georgia Tech picked up right where it left off at the start of the second half
with Tony Zenon scoring on a 35-yard touchdown run less than two minutes into
the third quarter. Washington followed that score up with a two-yard touchdown
run later in the frame as the Yellow Jackets stretched their lead to 36-19.
Miami got on the scoreboard for the first time since the first quarter
with a 23-yard field goal by Wieclaw with 4:25 left in the third quarter. The
Hurricanes then got a 15-yard touchdown run by James early in the fourth
quarter to pull within seven, 36-29.
James scored again with less than a minute to go in regulation, this time on a
10-yard reception from Morris that tied the game, 36-36, and forced overtime.
In the extra period, Georgia Tech was stuffed on a 4th-and-1 attempt at the
one-yard line, setting up James and the Hurricanes for the game winning score.
The two teams combined for 1,028 yards of total offense in the game. Miami
converted 11-of-16 attempts on third down and had 30 first downs to just 18 by
