(Saturday, March 2)
Final Score: Eastern Michigan 50, Western Michigan 49 (OT)
Ypsilanti, MI (Sports Network) - Glenn Bryant scored 15 points as the Eastern Michigan Eagles outlasted the Western Michigan Broncos in overtime, 50-49, in a Mid-American Conference tilt at the Convocation Center.
Daylen Harrison added 13 points for EMU (14-15, 7-7 MAC), which has won consecutive contests after dropping its previous two.
Shayne Whittington registered 11 points and 11 rebounds in 41 minutes for WMU (18-10, 9-5), which would have clinched the MAC's West Division crown with a win.
EMU led 23-18 at halftime despite shooting just 1-of-6 from behind the arc. The Broncos missed both of their free throws attempts in the period.
With 1:36 remaining in the contest, Derek Thompson hit a triple to knot things up at 42-42. Defense prevailed from that point on as neither team managed another basket in regulation. Bryant's layup attempt missed at the buzzer and five more minutes would be necessary to decide the outcome.
An old fashioned three-point play by Whittington put WMU ahead 47-46 with 2:36 left in the extra session, but Bryant responded with a jumper and two J.R. Sims free throws put the Eagles ahead by three with 29 seconds left. Nate Hutcheson then knocked down a short jumper to cut the deficit to 50-49. EMU twice missed the front end of a one-and-one at the foul line, but WMU was unable to take advantage.
EMU scored 17 points off turnovers off of 16 WMU turnovers.
