NCAA Game Summary - Gardner-Webb at Texas

(Tuesday, December 29th)

Final Score: (2) Texas 95, Gardner-Webb 63

Austin, TX (Sports Network) - Dexter Pittman and Jai Lucas each scored 15 points, as second-ranked Texas demolished Gardner-Webb, 95-63, at Frank Erwin Center.

Damion James turned in a solid performance with 14 points and 13 rebounds for Texas (12-0), which was coming off impressive wins over North Carolina and Michigan State. The Longhorns improved to 12-0 to start a season for the first time since the 1981-82 team began the year 14-0. All of Texas' wins have come by double-digit margins.

"Tonight, we scrambled a little bit. We went to multiple traps which we're not going to do a lot in the season obviously. But I wanted to see communication out of it and guys that covered each other and scrambled a bit," Texas head coach Rick Barnes said. "The second half I didn't think we did a very good job of getting our hands up and guarding the three-point line. Gardner-Webb brought some guys that can knock down the three, and we didn't do a great job defending the three."

C.J. Hailey finished with a game-high 20 points for Gardner-Webb (3-8), which has dropped eight straight games, including a 104-57 beating at the hands of Penn State on December 19th. Grayson Flittner and Anton Silver donated 12 and 10 points, respectively.

"We're glad this part of the season is over," Gardner-Webb head coach Rick Scruggs said. "Texas is playing the most well-balanced and is the most well rounded team we've played so far. They have great guards and great inside players."

The outcome of this one was never in doubt right from the opening tip. After Dogus Balbay's layup at the midpoint of the first half, the Longhorns were ahead 30-15 and the lead ballooned to a comfortable 55-28 at the intermission.

The second half proved to be no different than the first, as Texas went with reserves for the majority of the stanza and held a comfortable double-digit lead on the way to the blowout victory.
