MLB Game Summary - Arizona at Cleveland, Game Two
(Wednesday, August 13)
Final Score: Arizona 1, Cleveland 0 (12 innings)
Cleveland, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Tuffy Gosewisch hit a go-ahead RBI single in the top of the 12th inning and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Cleveland Indians, 1-0, in the second game of a doubleheader on Wednesday.
Alfredo Marte worked a leadoff walk against C.C. Lee (0-1) in the 12th and pinch-runner Xavier Paul advanced to second on Didi Gregorius' sacrifice bunt. Gosewisch stepped up next and brought home Paul when his broken-bat bouncer snuck through the middle of the infield.
"He jammed me a little bit with a slider," Gosewisch said. "Fortunately, it found a hole and got through."
Randall Delgado (2-3) tossed a scoreless top of the 11th to notch the win after taking the loss in the opening game of the twinbill. Michael Brantley hit a double to begin the 11th, but Delgado struck out Carlos Santana and Chris Dickerson before Zach Walters grounded out to end the threat.
Addison Reed struck out two in a scoreless bottom of the 12th to post his 28th save of the year.
Arizona starter Andrew Chafin scattered three hits and walked two over five scoreless frames in his MLB debut, while Indians starter Josh Tomlin gave up four hits over 5 1/3 blank innings.
Cleveland took Game 1 of the doubleheader on Walters' walk-off solo homer in the ninth.
"On a day that it was probably going to take a home run to win it, it was good to see him do it," Indians manager Terry Francona said of Walters' earlier homer.
The Indians' best chance to score in the first nine innings came in the second and fourth. With runners on first and second with two outs, Jose Ramirez bounced out to end the second. In the fourth, the Tribe put runners on second and third with two away, but Roberto Perez struck out to squander that scoring chance.
Arizona put the leadoff runner on third to start the eighth. Gosewisch smacked a double to right and got to third on Ryan Raburn's fielding error. Mark Rzepczynski then came on and sandwiched a walk in between strikeouts to Ender Inciarte and David Peralta. Bryan Shaw then toed the rubber and walked Mark Trumbo to load the bases, but then induced an inning-ending ground ball off the bat of Miguel Montero.
Arizona was 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position and left 11 men on base, while Cleveland finished 0-for-9 and stranded 10 ... Game time: 4:16.
