National League Game Summary - San Diego at Los Angeles
(Tuesday, August 19)
Final Score: Los Angeles 8, San Diego 6
Los Angeles, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Carl Crawford smacked a two-run homer among his three hits, three RBI and three runs scored as the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the San Diego Padres, 8-6, in the opener of a three-game set.
Justin Turner posted two hits, two RBI and two runs scored, while Kevin Correia (2-0) allowed four runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out six for the Dodgers, who snapped their three-game slide.
"It was a rough start for Kevin, but he settled down and kept us in the game. I thought we swung the bats pretty well tonight, especially Carl," Los Angeles manager Don Mattingly said.
Jedd Gyorko cracked a three-run shot to highlight his two-hit night and Ian Kennedy (9-11) gave up six runs -- five earned -- on seven hits and two walks over five frames for San Diego, which has dropped four of its last five on the heels of a five-game winning streak.
"As hard as we swung the bats, it was a tough loss. Mistakes came back to hurt us tonight," Padres manager Bud Black said.
The Padres opened the scoring on Gyorko's three-run shot in the first, but the Dodgers went in front after pushing across a pair in the second and three more in the fourth.
Crawford hit a one-out single in the second and scored on Turner's double to left-center. Turner scored on Erisbel Arruebarrena's base hit to right.
In the fourth, Matt Kemp led off with a double and Crawford walked before Turner's fly ball to deep center glanced off the glove of Abraham Almonte for a double, scoring Kemp. Arruebarrena walked to load the bases and Crawford was brought home by A.J. Ellis' sacrifice fly.
Turner scored on Correia's bunt from second when Jake Goebbert's throw to third on an attempted force out bounced away from Yangervis Solarte. Arruebarrena was thrown out at home on Dee Gordon's grounder to third, keeping it a 5-3 Dodgers lead.
The teams traded runs in the fifth on RBI singles by Seth Smith and Crawford, respectively, before LA tacked on two more runs in the seventh.
Yasiel Puig hit an infield single to begin the seventh and advanced to second on the play following a throwing error by Solarte. He moved to third on Adrian Gonzalez's groundout and after Kemp struck out, Crawford launched his two-run shot into the front row of seats to right, giving LA an 8-4 margin.
Yasmani Grandal's RBI double in the eighth cut the deficit to 8-5.
Will Venable scored on Almonte's bunt single and throwing error by Kenley Jansen in the ninth. With Almonte at second with two away, Gyorko lined a base hit to center. Almonte took a hard turn around third as Gonzalez cut off Puig's throw to the plate and nabbed Almonte on his way back to the bag and end the game to give Jansen his 35th save of the season.
The Dodgers recalled Arruebarrena from Triple-A Albuquerque before the game and optioned infielder Carlos Triunfel ... The Dodgers were 4-for-10 with runners in scoring position, while San Diego finished 5-for-11.
